Monofilament Calibration: Monofilament force of application specifications are based on 1) Semmes-Weinstein original monofilament specifications, and 2) Bell Krotoski and Buford actual force of application measurements using original monofilament specifications for 38mm length and specified diameters (standard for over 35 years in clinical testing).  Bell Krotoski and Buford measured and published the force of application produced by the monofilaments with equipment specifically engineered to measure their "dynamic" (elastic) force of application (references available in link).  Static force of application measurements can be inaccurate.  In her early works, Bell (Krotoski) with others developed the commonly used levels of sensibility detection, and has established detection levels based on normative and stimulus repeatability measurement research using measured and calibrated instruments.  She color-coded the monofilaments to enable peripheral nerve mapping and monitoring, and for recognition of critical diameter size and length that produce target force of application identified in normative testing and clinical trials. Color eliminates error in monofilament size in handles when monofilaments are manufactured, and examiner error during testing.
